Bob Hope Almost a Fiji

Jack Riley

This story is second hand; I was not there but it was told to me by brothers who were there.

It was Homecoming 1970. Late Friday night (or early Saturday morning), several brothers and pledges were sitting on the stone steps on College Street, probably guarding the float in the front yard. They noticed a familiar-looking man walking up College toward Toomer's Corner. It was Bob Hope, who had come to Auburn to give a Homecoming performance at Memorial Coliseum. He apparently was staying at the old Heart of Auburn Motel, and was taking a walk before going to bed. They talked for a few minutes, invited him into the house, and gathered the brothers who were still awake. Hope regaled them with stories and one-liners. They gave him a pledge pin, and he promised he would come back to be initiated. He never did, of course, but it's still a great story. "Thanks for the memory."
